The Best Fish & Chips in London
Where to find crispy, golden, proper fish & chips , not the tourist traps.
If you're in London and you haven't had proper fish & chips, have you even been here? I'm not talking about the sad floppy stuff you get at train stations. I mean the real deal; crispy batter, flaky white fish, proper chips (thick-cut, none of those skinny fry things), a dollop of mushy peas, and a splash of vinegar. Here's my first-person guide to my top chippy spots.
My Top Picks
Poppies Fish & Chips (Spitalfields)
The queue's worth it. Classic East End vibes, properly crispy, and they wrap it in newspaper-style paper. Proper.
Golden Union (Soho)
Hidden down a little alley, this place is tiny but brilliant. The batter's light and they do a mean curry sauce.
Seaforth (Leytonstone)
A bit further out, but this is where the locals go. No pretence, just great food at fair prices.
Bucky's Rules for Fish & Chips
👉 Rule one: eat it outside if you can. It just tastes better with fresh air!
👉 Rule two: vinegar goes on the chips, not the fish (fight me on this).
👉 Rule three: if they offer ketchup as the only condiment, it's not proper. You need vinegar, salt, and mushy peas at minimum.
Watch out for the seagulls!
Bucky's Pro Tip
Go at lunchtime, not dinner, the fish is fresher and the queues are shorter. Trust me on this one.
